Move Along, Nothing to See Here
Last year, I listened to that interview with Stephen Shore, and chose to transcribe two quotes. The first, and longest, was about Shore’s certainty and tactics with expensive 8×10 film, and I found it to be the most interesting bit. Later on, he took a swing at flickr, which I found both funny and ridiculous, so I pasted that in, at the bottom of the post.
A valuable discussion ensued. This was December, 2006. (Technorati tells me 240 days ago.)
In August, 2007, Alec Soth reposted the quote, linking back to 2point8, with a larger question about good photography on flickr. A dustup ensued. In response to his question, I wrote another bit in which I posted a few stellar photographs from flickr that have blown me away, but my tone had changed. (It’s hot down here this time of year.)
Alec’s posted two follow-ups, and here’s mine:
While the title may not be the best, and it’s not the kindest post I’ve made, I don’t feel the need (yet) to rewrite it or delete. I think that the discussion(s) both here on 2point8 and on Alec’s blog have value above and beyond the fact that I could/should have done a much better job transcribing the full-quote, rather than just pasting in the flammable bit. Because I didn’t, this small bit was bounced around the innernets and caused people grief. (Long time listener, first time caller.)
Regards to Mr. Soth & Mr. Shore for not pulling a larger quote, showing context.
