Street Lights
Two recent pictures have me scratching my head, in a good way. David Klammer’s photo from Democratic Books’ #4, “A Bhopal Recollection“, and a small pic on the Aperture site from Gillian Laub’s “Testimony“.
Each is a street picture, though one’s a portrait, and the other’s more of a sports shot. Each has dynamic, fluxing elements mixed-up with the static constraints of big lighting equipment. (Am I right about this? Doesn’t the Laub pic look like it’s lit with far-off-camera strobe?) It looks like an interesting place to play - somewhere between DiCorcia’s “Heads”, and good ol’ available-light wide-angle street photography.
Not much to say other than more please, thank you.
…Ooh, to answer my own request, I just remembered that Klammer’s work was selected for a World Press Photo award. He made those memorable portraits of World Cup Fans with off-camera flash. (I can remember pictures, but I’m rusty on the names of people who took them…) And looking at those reminds me of Brian Finke’s sports work.
