I came across Raul's site some time ago and have always been curious as to how he manages to get such utterly candid shots. After reading the interview I am impressed with the simplicity of the techniques and doubly impressed that he does it all with a wide lens whch forces him almost on top of the action. I wonder though if his techniques are most appropriate when you are an outsider. I'd love to see more of his work from less exotic locals to see if his style is any different on home turf.

An interesting an insightful interview. It's encouraging to know that being a friendly, engaging person, makes for better photography.

I don't think the definitions matter too much. If anything, they are just useful after the fact: if the work is documenting something, it is documentary. If you are looking at a street picture for exclusively artistic reasons, it goes the way of "street". It can be both, also. Having little compartments where to classify things helps just in a very superficial manner, I think.

Great blog, btw--I've subscribed to the feed and plan to check often.

Interesting discussion. I have been following Mexican Pictures for some time and would have to disagree with one point. While the style of the photos might be 'street', it would be hard not to look at the work displayed and say it is not documentary photography. Isn't most street photography, especially when many images of a particular place are presented together, documentary phtoography? Do the definitions matter? Does the intent matter? Also if one is "hanging out" with the subjects, is it still 'street'? If you think of yourself as a street photographer does it change the work?

Both of you seem committed to "straight" photography with natural light and unposed subjects. Is it still street if the phtographer uses a flash? What if the subjects are is posed?

I've been thinking of putting up a website. Does the web change the way you work? Doies it influence your choice of shots?

Many more questions, but I'll go away now.

Thanks for sharing all those stories with us, it's a really good interview. Putting the images in context really adds an additional layer of depth to them.
