Let me first say thank you! The writing on your site is amazing..It's exactly what I needed to read today. I am so glad to hear that issues like gaining focus, developing style, and the fear of photographing people are not only my own.

I've found that the most frustrating days of shooting are those without some focus or direction. I end up shooting hundreds of shots trying to capture something I am happy with, and usually end up with pretty much nothing I'm happy with.

I now try to stop and take a couple breaths in a location, and really understanding my environment. The really good shots for me are usually triggered by some obscure detail, and without learning to tune out the rest of the noise it's nearly impossible for me to create an image I'm really proud of.

Thanks again for your work on this site, it's something I'd reccomend to everyone who's ever picked up a camera and headed for the street!

The focus thought is right on! If one's mind is cluttered with too many other things, then the small details that can make or break a photo will be easy to overlook. I sometimes find myself worrying about how to pay next month's rent and that's enough to break my concentration. The happier one is, the more likely success on the street is, I think...

As far as what to shoot is concerned, just keep shooting what you like, and your style will emerge from the proof sheets in due time...
